A critical component to the success of web services is the ability to publish and access information about available services in publicly available registries. Currently, there are several competing standards in the area of web services registries. UDDI and ebXML Registry are currently the two most popular of these standards. To abstract the differences between registries of different types, an effort is underway to define a single Java API for accessing any type of registry. The planned result is an API called the Java API for XML Registries (JAXR). JAXR will provide a layer of abstraction from the specifics of each registry system, enabling standardized access to web services information from Java. JAXR is expected to handle everything from executing complex registry queries to submitting and updating your own data to a particular registry system. The primary benefit is that you will have access to heterogeneous registry content without having to code your components to any specific format. Just as JNDI enables dynamic discovery of resources, JAXR will enable dynamic discovery of XML-based registry information. More information on JAXR is available at http:/ /java.sun.com/xml/jaxr/. The JAXR specification is currently in public review draft, and an early access reference implementation is part of the Java XML Pack. Because of its perceived future importance with regard to web services and the number of parties interested in ensuring its interface is rock solid, this specification is likely to change dramatically before its first official release. We encourage you to stay on top of developments in this API, especially if you plan to produce or consume web services in J2EE.

Site maps are a common feature of cutting-edge Web sites. A site map is a graph that represents all the pages and directories found in a Web site. Site map information is used to show users the logical coordinates of the page they are visiting, allow them to access site locations dynamically, and render all the navigation information in a graphical fashion (as shown in Figure 6-3). ASP.NET 2.0 contains a rich navigation infrastructure that allows developers to specify the site structure. We ll cover the site map navigation control in detail in 8. For now, suffice it to say that the site map is a hierarchical piece of information that can be used as input for a hierarchical data source control. This control is the SiteMapDataSource class. The site map information can appear in many ways, the simplest of which is an XML file named web.sitemap located in the root of the application.

should be the least of your concerns. Regardless of whether the attacker manages to use the hashes directly or crack them, your network is beyond repair already. Your only solution is to rebuild any compromised computer including the entire network if a domain or enterprise admin account could be compromised from scratch or from a backup that is provably not compromised.

Summary

Password hashes are plaintext equivalent. You have seen that stated several times, and it should be eminently clear by now. The secret used by the server to verify the client s identity is the same secret the client uses to prove its identity. This is true of all shared secret authentication protocols, not just those used by Windows. If a criminal manages to capture that secret, he can simply use it to prove his identity, without any knowledge of the password used to create that secret. This is a crucial point. If we can accept the fact that password hashes are plaintext equivalent the way we think about password security changes. First, we can immediately see why replacing the current NT hashes with salted ones is meaningless, because the salted ones are also plaintext equivalent. Protecting against stolen hashes with a salt is a bit like putting a band-aid on a severed limb; it is unlikely to have much impact on the actual problem. Second, we can also see that the core problem is not password hashes, but attackers with access to them. The only real, technical, solution is to move completely away from challenge-response protocols to public key protocols. However, this requires a substantial change to all platforms and is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Therefore, the real solution is to stop attackers from getting at password hashes. To do that we need to minimize the exposure of password hashes and we need to ensure that we adequately protect our authentication servers. 13 discusses these topics in depth.
